Eco-Congregation

Congratulations to St John’s Church Edinburgh on gaining their second Eco-Congregation Award!

The assessors were very impressed with the work displayed by the congregation. They particularly commended the congregation for the following:

• The Earth Be Glad project that they have developed is of national importance and reflects the work that they and other members of the congregation have invested in the project. By drawing down Climate Challenge Funds to support the project they have demonstrated vision and determination that has resulted in a growing proportion of the congregation becoming involved;
• The work of the gardening group that have made very good progress in managing the grounds of the Church and making it both more attractive and increasing biodiversity;
• The development of worship materials, including the special liturgy for Creation Time and the commitment of the clergy at St. John’s to become involved in and support the work.

Congratulations to St Paul’s & St George’s Church Edinburgh on gaining their first Eco-Congregation Award!

The assessors particularly commended the congregation for the following:

• The efforts made to bring the whole building up to a higher level of energy efficiency, including the loft insulation;
• The imaginative fair trade initiatives that keep people involved and active;
• The engagement in the World Development Movement’s Global Connect programme;
• The work with the Parent & Toddler group.

Well done!

The next meeting of the Dumfries & Galloway network will take place next Wednesday, 17th November, 7.30pm at Dunscore Parish Church. The main part of the evening will be to hear from several local people who have had direct experience of installing renewable energy technologies in their homes or property. Advice on grants and where to get technical help will also be available. So come along and find about what works, what it costs and what savings (CO2 and money!) can be made!
Everyone is welcome – the meetings are informal and friendly!

Directions for Dunscore from Dumfries: Take the A76 (northbound) and turn off left onto the B729 (signposted for Dunscore). When you reach the village, take the left fork, past the war memorial and the church is in front of you. Parking is to the rear of the church. If anyone would like a lift – or could offer one, please get in touch.

Congratulations to Torry St Fittick’s Church on gaining their first Eco-Congregation Award!

The assessors particularly commended the congregation for the following:

• The good sense of community within Torry St Fittick’s that supports the eco-congregation work.
• The significant effort that has been made by the church to include caring for creation themes in the service content.
• The work involved in drawing up plans for refurbishment, which include energy saving measures and the progress made thus far in fund raising for this project.
• The church’s involvement with the community and communication of eco-congregation aims through the Hall letting policy.
• The church’s commitment to Fair Trade and recycling projects.
• The church’s support for the Malawi Container project.
• Keeping everyone informed and involved in the eco-congregation work through good publicity in the church magazine, on the noticeboard and website.

The next meeting of the Stirling network will be on Tuesday 9th November, 7.30pm at St Ninian’s Old Parish Church, Kirk Wynd, Stirling FK7 9AY. The main topic for the evening will be an opportunity to see and hear about the energy saving measures that have been installed. Please come along!
