The network which meets in Inverness includes churches from Moray, Ross and Abernethy.
There are now 35 churches on our database in the area who have been in touch to ask about eco-congregation in their church. Nine of these churches have gone on to work through the Churches’ Check Up, drawn up an action plan and registered with us. This is all you have to do to become registered as an eco-congregation!
Good News!
Since our Inverness workshop last autumn 3 churches (our northern most mainland churches) have registered as eco-congregations – welcome to Cannisbay, Dunnet and Ness Bank Parish Churches!
Daviot and Dunlichity linked with Moy, Dalarossie and Tomatin Churches have been working away at creation care projects for some time and recently decided to apply for an Eco-Congregation Award. They have undertaken work in all three areas of the programme including: looking at biblical teaching about our relationship to creation and the effect we have on it, encouraging recycling and using recycled products, looking after wildlife in the manse garden, monitoring and trying to reduce their energy use in the church buildings.
St Ninian’s, Invergordon report that they recycle all their paper, cardboard, cans ,and what plastic they can. This has considerably reduced their waste. They have planted their small garden with insect attracting plants and have erected 3 bird boxes in the more secluded part of their land. The Guide group, that uses their hall, paid for two of the bird boxes and a member of the congregation paid for the third. The hall is also used by a variety of other community groups. They weed their hard standing area, rather than use weed killer. All their light bulbs were changed to the energy saving type as soon as they became available. They describe themselves as “a small congregation and quite an aged one and we are not wealthy” but they support overseas projects as well as Scottish ones. Members of the congregation are actively involved with local issues and trying to stop the incinerator coming to Invergordon is pretty high on the agenda.
