It has taken me 7 years to write Poacher’s Pilgrimage, though with 4 other books produced along the way. Why so long? Outwardly, it is a pilgrimage through Harris and Lewis disguised as a fishing trip, over 12 days in May 2009. Inwardly, it is an ecology of the imagination that opened up layers and layers of depth and meaning. It addresses some of the most pressing issues of our times, especially rare insights into our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It explores the pressing need to develop spiritual paths that are fit for purpose for today. It asks what we might be inside of. Beyond that, I really don’t know where to start in describing this book. The publisher has pitched it as a travelogue. Well, yes, it became a mighty river on which I was pitched through space, time, and their remarkable embodiment in the places I traversed, and the dear people with whom I conversed on the islands where I grew up.
