WILD PLACES: The John Muir Film Festival marks the opening of the new coast to coast pathway with film screenings and speakers at The Brunton, Musselburgh plus screenings at venues along the Way.

WILD PLACES, presented by The Brunton, reflects Muir’s passion for wild places and the environment and celebrates all of the talents of this extraordinary Scotsman – as a naturalist, writer, artist, explorer and founder of the modern conservation movement.

 

Films and speakers include:

The Last Explorers – John Muir (12A), BBC documentary. Neil Oliver follows in Muir’s footsteps, set in the spectacular Yosemite Valley, with pre screening talk from Countryfile’s Tom Heap.

The Edge of the World (U). Michael Powell’s love story set on the remote island of Foula.

Baraka (PG). Breathtaking documentary capturing images from 24 countries that transcend geographical and language barriers. Pre screening talk from Scott Donaldson of Creative Scotland discussing the link between the arts and environmental issues.

Grizzly Man (15). Fascinating documentary about Timothy Treadwell who spent 13 summers in Alaska living among grizzly bears.

Into The Wild (15). Sean Penn’s moving film about Chris McCandless who leaves behind his family and possessions to search for a greater communion with nature. Pre screening talk with Edinburgh Makar Ron Butlin who reads from Muir’s journals and letters.

Over The Hedge (U). A scheming raccoon fools a mismatched family of forest creatures into helping him repay a debt of food, by invading the new suburban sprawl that popped up while they were hibernating.

Chasing Ice (12A). A profound cinematic experience featuring breathtaking time lapse footage of the impact of climate warming and glacial melt. Pre screening talk with top British mountaineer and stand up comic, Andy Kirkpatrick.
