Congratulations to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and the Lauriston Jesuit Centre in Edinburgh, who gained their first Eco-Congregation awards. Their particular achievements include – joined environmental initiatives between the church and the centre. While the church’s peace and justice group was clearly the prime mover behind their green policies, Lauriston Jesuit Centre have managed to achieve solid buy-in from all the other sectors of the church community. – an impressive and ongoing “Environment Series” programme of talks and events. – the refurbishment of church fabric, especially the hall, to a very high environmental standard and the amount of time and effort put in to secure a substantial Climate Challenge Fund grant. – the production of Scottish Catholic Study Guide on the environment. Well done!

1st award to Helensburgh URC!

Helensburgh United Reformed Church achieved their first Eco-Congregation Award!

On 25th April, Helensburgh URC was the second United Reformed Church to achieve an Eco-Congregation Award. The assessors commended them particularly on

  • the programme of worship led by the worship team
  • their practical energy measures, which have been very effective in reducing the church’s carbon emissions
  • their contribution to the Helensburgh and Lomond local network that has been important in getting it off the ground
  • and
  • their participation in the “Commitment to Life” initiative.

First award for a United Reformed Church congregation: Coaltown of Balgonie URC

Congratulations to Coaltown of Balgonie URC, who are the first United Reformed Church congregation to achieve an Eco-Congregation Award!

The award assesors commended the congregation particularly on
– The awareness demonstrated by the congregation of their relationship with the environment and the active steps taken recently to deepen that awareness.
– The considerable range of activity, which includes other community groups, relative to the size of the congregation.
– The well organised and inspirational leadership of the Rev Price.
– The willingness to undertake and commitment to further work.
