This short (5 hour) course is suitable for those who have dealings with the waste arising in their church, champion green or sustainability issues or are interested in stimulating behaviour change. Participants require no prior in-depth knowledge of waste.

Why me?

This foundation level course is aimed at anyone who generates, handles or manages waste as part of their role within any organisation that operates as a business. It provides a background to the impact that waste has on our environment. It also, importantly, gives information that is necessary to make astute and efficient waste related decisions, whilst increasing sustainability and improving performance The course is also suitable for those who do not deal directly with waste such as those:

• who champion sustainability and green issues within their organisation
• are interested in stimulating behaviour change in this area

 

What will I get from this course?

Waste Smart is a Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM) industry standard training course designed to offer accessible, practical and sustainable waste and resource management skills. It is endorsed by Zero Waste Scotland and is designed to help organisations cut their waste costs, comply with all necessary legislation and become more resource efficient.

The course comprises 5 modules, interspersed with participant exercises, each of which aims to equip participants with skills that will help them manage waste within their organisation. These are:

Waste as a resource – Identifies different types of wastes and their legal definition. It explores the idea that wastes can be a resource with a potential value

The environmental impact of waste – Explores how unsustainable our reliance on virgin materials is, and considers what we do with our wastes and how this can impact on the environment

The cost of managing waste – Explains the hidden costs of managing wastes and the real cost of waste disposal

Understanding and applying the Waste Hierarchy – This session explains the Waste Hierarchy and helps participants to identify different options for managing wastes within their organisation.

Legislation and compliance – Gives a fundamental understanding of the different legislation and legal duties that apply to any organisation that generates waste and also those legal duties that fall on individuals who manage or handle waste on behalf of their organisation.

A short, formal, written assessment can be undertaken by participants at the end of the course. The questions are predominantly multiple choice but some offer the opportunity to elaborate and expand to demonstrate understanding. Sitting this assessment is not mandatory, however, those participants who successfully complete the assessment receive a CIWM certificate.

 

Duration of the course

The course lasts for approximately 5 hours (plus time to sit the assessment if this option is selected).

 

Cost of the course

Courses can be delivered in the Glasgow area at a cost of £60 per participant (minimum number of participants 6). Charges for delivery in other locations would be higher to reflect relevant travel or subsistence costs. In addition to this a fee of £25 per delegate is charged by CIWM for each assessment that is submitted. There is a possibility, however, that this assessment fee could be met from funding available through Zero Waste Scotland. What resources are required to deliver the course? The course can be delivered in any quiet, comfortable area that is equipped with data projection equipment and suitable writing tables. The duration of the course is 5 hours (plus assessment time). It is, therefore, necessary to either provide catering for participants or to make arrangements so that they can have refreshments and lunch at their own expense.
